Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company Document

     (Larry Hale Collection)

On June 6, 1824, Captain George Cooper (Boat No. 87) and Mate John Snyder, embarked from Mauch Chunk on a one-way trip down the Lehigh River, passing through the new system of "Bear Trap" locks on their way to the Delaware River. The document shown above was carried on the boat folded to letter size and addressed to Ely & Murray, New Hope. They arrived in New Hope (via the Delaware River) on Monday June 7, 1824 at 5 o'clock. Both the document and the boat appear to have stayed at New Hope, where the boat must have been disassembled ---I found the document at "Lambertville." Then later on September 21, 1924 a certain Robert Peeple received and signed for the metal fittings and materials belonging to the boat and presumably (as was standard practice) packed them by horse or mule back to Mauch Chunk for reuse.
