In April 2010 I heard a presentation by David Connelly, Supt., Washington Crossing State Park, New Jersey. "In 2012 it will be 100 years since a poem was published in the Trenton newspaper that inspired the state to eventually organize the park. It took 15 years for the state to purchase the land and finally dedicate the park in 1927. Special activities are being planned for 2012" [Ref: WC4 4/18/10 Dinner at Yardley Country Club]. Mr. Connelly describing the history of the park, passed around a booklet titled "Washington Crossing State Park, New Jersey" compiled by Charles P. Wilber, State Forester, Division of Forest and Parks, Dept. of Conservation & Development, State of New Jersey, 1928. If I had ever seen this book I would remember it by its cover. Was it "blind-chance" that a single copy showed up several weeks later at the Allentown Paper Show?
I checked out the credentials of Charles P. Wilber on the web and found out he was born in 1882, graduated from Rutgers University, and received a Master in Forestry from Yale University in 1908. His first job was with the United States Forest Service. From 1911 to 1923 he held the position of New Jersey state fire warden for the New Jersey Forest Commission. He later became director of the Division of Forestry, Geology, and Parks. Memberships included: Society of American Foresters, the Eastern States Forestry Association, and the National Geographic Society [Ref: "Biographical record of the graduates of the Yale Forest School].
