Description of Scudders Falls Station:
Stereo View by Unknown Photographer
Location is Ewing Township, 4-miles above Trenton, New Jersey
Photographer is standing near where today's I-95 On-Ramp (going south) crosses the canal
Delaware & Raritan Feeder Canal is shown on the right
Lower River Road is below the elevation of the canal and to the left
The Industrial Waterway built by the Trenton Delaware Power Company is lower and further left.
The Delaware River is immediately to the left of the Industrial Waterway
Lower River Road ran along the Industrial Canal and is shown in the distance turning up to the right and crossing a canal bridge. This part of River Road still exists today, and has been converted into a small parking lot located immediately up the steep hill from the popular and scenic Kayak area. Actually, the Kayaks are operating against the swift current generated by the remnants of the original dam constructed by the Trenton Delaware Power Company. The purpose of the dam was to divert water into the industrial canal. Today water headed for the abandoned Industrial Canal is immediately diverted back to the River, thus allowing the Kayaks to circle around for another run. The Industrial Canal followed very close to the river, starting out at the same elevation as the river, but gradually gaining head, i.e. elevation above the river, as it flowed toward Trenton. Traces of the Industrial Water Canal can still be easily found. In some places it was lined with rocks on the side toward the river. River Road was built at a much higher elevation than the Industrial Canal, but nowhere near as high as the Raritan Feeder Canal. This abandoned road bed still exists past the dead-end of the small parking lot, between the other side of the intervening Raritan Canal overflow spillway and the toe of the fill for the I-95 On-Ramp Southbound.
